i see it as someone [a guy, by the singer] missing someone [a girl], and they've gone away on a trip of some sort. so he's counting the days until she comes home, like he does every time she goes away. and this part,

Telling me that one day has come and gone
I'll be home soon if you miss me
Count down the days until my return
I'll be counting too I always do
seems to make more sense if you think of it as the girl saying the part, 'one day's come and gone, i'll be home soon, etc'. get it? =]
