One of my favorite Avett Bros songs. It can relate to so many different things, but I think it's about a girl 'testing her wings' so to speak.
She's fighting with the sky...
She wants to be on her own and find out what's out there before she, well, dies.
I think that the bridge is perhaps from the point of view of a guy she's leaving behind.
"You can try to swim the sea" relating to she's looking for other 'fish in the sea' and other people.
"But say goodbye to you and me." He won't be waiting for her when she gets back.
