it's about growing up and after you've spent your entire childhood/adolescence being a kid and getting to be carefree and not have to worry about responsibility it seems like all of a sudden the world wants you to be an adult and to take your place in the mold. I think the pins line is referring to the title--think about being on pins and needles--that's the feeling of the child being forced to grow up. And I like the metaphor of the child like a pin cushion who all these people have placed their o(pin)ions in and then pull away expecting the child to be able to stand on his own but all he feels like is full of holes.

pulling pins out of the hole indside the hole your in = rebeling against those forcing him to grow up. but in the end he loses (You're old enough, boy,Too many summers you've enjoyed,So spin the wheel,We'll set you up with some odd convictions). Once he grows up he gets stuck with some job no one wants and he had no say in whether he got it or not
