He loves this girl and would do anything for her (hijack a plane to France) but at the same time he feels as though he's not good enough for her, for instance he drinks too much. But he's trying to make himself better - to search for the better part of him, because he cares so much about her (your hold on me is stronger than the alcohol).
However he also knows that this won't last forever and sometime they'll have to go their seperate ways. For now he's just enjoying her company and feeling lucky that he's got even this short time with her.
Also I think it should be 'turning up the fan' rather than 'the flame' as it makes more sense that way? =/
