When I first listened to this song I thought it was about a parent trying to keep his son from being hurt like he has felt before. Then I took a look from another perspective and related it to Jesus Christ. It also makes sense if applied in a spiritual sense. "Praying that he'll never have to feel the pain I have felt"... being crucified perhaps? We are all god's children.
