Next part of the story, she gave him her house keys. A sense of trust. Through a note he learns, apparently, that not only is he given the right to live and be with her, but that he's knocked her up in the process.
She learns what he's been doing. An argument ensues, karmic payback, 'the past sprayed out like mace'. Fortunately, there was so much more to it than that. He's out of her life now, and she won't even care to listen to him outright anymore.
She's always been a doormat and non-confrontational, it seems -- she was always letting him get away with everything -- but in the end, he took her for granted. He let -her- get away.
