to me, its about trying to make the relationship work because he's never had a love like her before, and it hurts him so bad to see it dying like it that he's trying to make it work even though it seems impossible.
they still love each other, and they miss each other.. but theyre just so stuck in the problem & so pissed about it that they cant do anything about it.its like moving mountains.
