I've always seen it the way that he is visiting this ex-lover og -friend in Australia and the thing with canceling the plain to America means he stays, or that he should be going to America and decides to cancel that plain and visit the person instead. Maybe not to get the relationship going again, but because he cannot help it, and just want to see her/him. And because he miss the person so much, he says he's going to visit, whether they like it or not.
I've always imagined him in the airport and the plain on his way and in the end standing at the doorway ringing the bell and holding his breath hoping for the best. In a way this song actually kinda reminds me of "Don't Know You Anymore".
