Lyric discussion by trncd

I agree that the song is about a relationship between a father and a daughter, but I believe the two in the song are actually related. The woman is angry at her father for depriving her of a childhood. And Smithy, the bum is saying her anger is so obvious that he can see it in her eyes. The woman has lived a difficult life, hence 'not a stranger to the fight.' The bum visits her everyday to make up for the time he wasn't there for her as a child, and he realizes it when he says he should of been a better father. He sees how his actions affected his daughter badly. This is the way I see it, because I can personally relate to the story. This has to be my fav. song off the new album.
