Ok, so like everyone else here I at first had no idea what this song meant. However, something happened in my life recently that allowed to to interpret my own meaning to this beautiful song. Here's what I think: it is a song about liking someone and not having the courage to tell them. Let me explain:

"The sun brings its haze The clutter of days You can't find your dawn."

Notice the dark imagery here. Right from the beginning, the vocalist/narrator is completely miserable with his life, setting the tone for the song.

"So stuck in your ways But all you can say is "The moment has passed now but where has it gone?""

From here Mae gives insight into the real message of the song: letting things pass by. The narrator is so "stuck in his ways" that he can't admit to his feelings and blames time for not taking action, but then later on realizes what he was missing ("the moment has passed now; but where has it gone?")

"You wake up, only to find There was no piece of mind in your sleep You wake up, the dreams that were there are The memories you can't seem to keep."

Quite simply, this is a descriptive stanza describing the narrator's feelings towards his significant person. He dreams about her but can't seem to turn those dreams into reality, and therefore make into memories ("the dreams that were there are the memories you can't seem to keep").

"Another day, you walk this spinning wheel Forgetting how to feel And how long since it took your breath away Don't spend another minute trying to Find out where the moments have gone."

The fact that the narrator describes his life as a "spinning wheel" and how he forgot "how to feel and how long since it (love/the girl) took his breath away" signifies that he feels like his life is going nowhere (like a hampster on a wheel) and he inwardly wants to break free. The last two lines are his realization that he needs to do so: he is referencing the original "where have the moments gone" in the first verse and is beginning to grow and understand.

"So lost in this place The lines on your face Were built by your mind."

This is about personal barriers. The "lines on your face" or wrinkles signify the unnecessary stress the narrator is putting upon himself. He should just tell her how he feels.

"All of this time When does love decide Now to shake you up, wake you up?"

The final moral message of the song, so beautifully put. Love is the only factor that can truly "shake" and "wake" you up from your life. Without it, you will indeed live in a "spinning wheel" that goes nowhere. Life is too short to simply think of love in dreams: go out and live it. Tell her how you feel.

So yeah, that's what I think. Might have overanalyzed it, but whatever. Such an amazing song overall... Mae = loveeeee

That last sentence... I concur.
