Well, this is (quite obviously) about a guy who feels like he's down on his luck and really doesn't see himself escaping this rut anytime soon ("half the winter still to go"). He's trying to pull himself up for this girl, I'd presume, but he's so lost in his depression that it's difficult for him to reach for something he doesn't see as in his grasp ("it gets so hard to see to the stars when you don't know where they are"). He wants to love this girl, but he is afraid of getting hurt. He knows that love necessarily entails taking risks, and this is a risk he should be taking, but he can't squash his fears. He admits that he needs her help, saying that he'll "disappear" if she leaves him "fallen". Maybe this is what he meant when he said, "Can't you see I'm waiting?" He was waiting for both the end of this difficult time and for her help.
