"Someone that I met, that I hardly knew, he said that everyone loves a defective heart" = some stranger at a bar is telling him that chicks dig a sad dude, especially after a break up.
He ends up meeting a girl, getting high, and taking it from there. But in the end he realizes that this new hook up is not helping him get over his previous girl.
That's just my interpretation. BTW, how is this not everyone's fav song? kidding, of course, but personally, I love it.
