It could simply be about someone who's simply introverted. Doesn't want to spend time with many people, having low self esteem and mentally torturing themself hence: "There's nothing you can do that I've not already done to myself."
Maybe, he ends up at a party/prom and is coerced into dancing with some girl he really likes ("Be nice, be nice to me..."), but is too proud ("Too cool...") to actually admit this.

Until she came along he wanted nothing else until her.
He loved her and lost her. she turned out to not be what he thought and it came crashing down on him because he was fine with out her until he had her.
