Love these lyrics. There's not a lot needs to be said in explanation of them apart from restating the title really: it seems to be about the desperate hope that there's something in life to cling to and depend on, a saviour, something transcendent, but if it does exist it's maddeningly elusive. Always 'across the sea'.
I love the way it's integrated with life, too, though, and isn't just metaphysical. The first thing she craves is intimacy, and her doubts and pain are associated with people, not just ideas.
I also love the consistency of the sea metaphor, and how different shades of it are drawn out. I think it's handled really skillfully.
Not sure I like the way some of these lyrics sound when sung. "Past relationships in her life" isn't a very musical line to my ear. Same with "concern for the truth." Ah well.
