It's almost like she is manipulating him; stringing him along so to speak. IE-- "I'm not hip to all your tricks, your algebra, your politics."
Buttt the tell-tale line for me is when he says, "I have confidence issues with your intentions." To me, this says he can't trust her.
But he still wants her... Oh my, does he want her. And I get the feeling he'd do anything for her-- but can only do so much, because of her manipulation, and the fact that for whatever reason, she won't let him in. So, instead of putting up with her nonesense-- he just is there, willing to wait. Hence MY MOST FAVORITE LYRIC of the song, "Standing annonymous, hoping your heart will just wake up and ask for me by name. Maybe someday it will ask for me by name-- just not today."
