To me this song is just saying that bad things are going to happen to you. Whether you know it or not...they will happen. And they may may not happen at the most convenient times and you will be extremely upset and down because they did happen. I know that with bad thing after bad thing happening to me in the past five months alone I have wanted to just give up and never try again.
But just as this song tells me that life is hard, it also tells me that if you give in to the bad things you won't be able to take advantage of all the good things that may come your way. When she says "it's only life" it's like she's saying, "Bad things happen. Deal with them as best as you can and move on. You can never get better if you only dwell on the bad stuff."
