Wow, you guys are so off... the song is a newfoundland folk song written in the late 1800's. Its about a bunch of wild kids starting a riot that ends up getting Pat Murphy killed. BUT... they are not mourning, they all hated him. Thats why "they said it was a silly shame, and they WINKED at one another" and "EVERY DRINK IN THE PLACE WAS FULL." Hell, they stopped the funeral procession at a bar to get hammered and left the corpse. The last verse from the original goes as such:

It was twenty years ago me boys that old Pat was put underground And every year to celebrate they all push the jug around They gather at the graveyard and pour vinegar in his ditch Cuz everybody hated that lousy son-of-a-bitch
