Wow, you guys are so off... the song is a newfoundland folk song written in the late 1800's. Its about a bunch of wild kids starting a riot that ends up getting Pat Murphy killed. BUT... they are not mourning, they all hated him. Thats why "they said it was a silly shame, and they WINKED at one another" and "EVERY DRINK IN THE PLACE WAS FULL." Hell, they stopped the funeral procession at a bar to get hammered and left the corpse. The last verse from the original goes as such:

And every year to celebrate they all push the jug around
