Well, I was thinking about this song and I tried to find it some sense. After a few minutes of discussing with myself (that time, i was thinking about it since I heard that song for the first time, enjoying just the music 'cause the lyrics had no sense to me) and I guessed something.
The guy who's singing is talking about someone called Mike, and he want him to be his friend, he sends him money, he's waiting Mike's girlfriend enjoys Mike's gifts and a ride on a car (or something like that), but, for some weird reason, Mike doesn't seem to like this guy...
"It's real bad, it's cold out here
It's been a long and lonely year"
Well, it seems they don't see each other al last the one whole year before. I guess it means they don't see a lot each other, in fact I believe they hardly see each other.
"Don't give up, Be my friend"
...
If I knew someone called Mike no matter how great was this guy, if he was so mean to me I wouldn't send him money!
But I was thinking about it a little more and I concluded the only one person I could try to get happy no matter what happen was my own son.
That's the point!
Listen to my theory:
Ryan (Let's call him so) is a middle-aged man who was searching for a job in his own city, but he could'nt find it, so he decided to try to get a job in another place, like another state, another city or, inclusive, another country.
But Ryan has a son: Mike. They had to separate when Mike was too young and that made Mike angry about his own father, for let him alone... (just saying)...
Well, that cold and hard year could mean Ryan was working so hard and he send Mike money, but not just Mike, but all his family (possibly his wife, i don't think he had another son or daughter)...
Mike is angry to Ryan 'cause he broke a promise. I dunno why, but I guess that when I hear "The [shooting star] we all wished on", that's why mike is so mean to Ryan, and why he doesn't want to return his calls or being his friend...
Ryan can't talk directly to Mike, that's why he's writing a letter. He's talking about someone great, a great friend, in fact, the best of them, but he recognize he could get angry (Remember "The Dark side shows, the dark side grows"), that could mean despite everything, Ryan gets hurt by Mike's Attitude to him.
End of the Theory
...Was I high when I thought about this?
Remember that guy of Yellowcard who's got Latin roots... That song could sound like the migration problem... That is the strongest reason I got to believe in my own theory... :]
