this represents the expectations/stereotypes that society has for certain races. that's my interpretation of this song. i face these expectations quite frequently... i am mulatto. people tell me i act "white", or some people tell me i act "ghetto". mulatto, asian, mexican... there's expectations for all races. and when those expectations are shattered, people tend to look at you funny. my dad is black, but breaks the social expectations of a black person. he doesn't like "gangsta rap", he RARELY drinks, he's more into alternative & complex music. he's a poet. he cooks. he takes care of his children. he's a college graduate. he served our country in the navy. and because of these things that he's done, that aren't what the "typical black person" is "supposed" to do, he gets mild amounts of ridicule. even from his own children, but now that i've listened to this song, i see that he probably faces this quite frequently like i do, and i hate that feeling. personally, i think tht races are just another way to divide the already divided and conflicting nations of the world. i don't see myself as just "black" or just "white" and i don't think i "act" like a certain race. personally i'm ME... in terms of music, i really love it all. in terms of close, i like it all. i have an unregionalzed accent. and people look at me funny. but in the end, like this song says, the struggle of being you is prevalent everyday. but i live through it. i love songs like this, that make me think critically!
i am 14 by the way :) believe it or not. and i DON'T like 50 cent and i wasn't forced to listen to people like common. it's a personal choice, perhaps an influence from the good music i was raised on.
i am bi-racial as well and had the same interpretation as you but i am offended by your comment on not listening to 50 cent i listen to both and although common sends great messages you shouldn't act as if he is going out telling ppl to kill and steal
