This song is irony. It is irreverant, to a degree. I feel like the woodgrain represents something real, static, and natural.

I don't think he's being ironic or irreverent; I think he's just saying that wanting this person has worn him out and he's run out of eloquent or charming things to say, but he still wants her to know he's thinking about her.
