Sour grapes could be referring to the greek fable, The Fox and the Grapes. "The protagonist, a fox, upon failing to find a way to reach grapes hanging high up on a vine, retreated and said: "The grapes are sour anyway!" The moral is stated at the end of the fable as:

It is easy to despise what you cannot get. "

People are going to keep making these rationalizations and "despise what they cannot get" until they realize what others have realized, that having nothing is happiness. Blah, make sense? It's so hard to explain.
