I feel that this song is about how it's okay to be unhappy during the holidays. Bad things can happen at any time of the year, Christmas being one of them. I know for a fact that a year and a half ago during December I was having a difficult time with certain issues. Whether it be a death of a loved one, a specific (unfortunate) diagnosis, school work, stress, etc...it's okay to be upset and not smile. No matter how you're feeling you shouldn't have to put on a mask and pretend that everything's okay when it's really the exact opposite.
My thoughts exactly. The girls actually said that they wrote because their grandmother passed away around Christmas time, and they were too upset to celebrate. They wanted to have a song about being upset on Christmas because they could relate and they knew many others could, too.
