Well put dreamer of evil, i think your interpretation hits the nail on the head, very similar to mine, but I have never noticed the references to other religious views, i always looked at it from only a christian perspective.

Just wanted to add, "And we strive for the flame As if death was our aim Cause we cannot understand" He seems to be taking a shot at the people who let their thoughts about the afterlife guide their lives. i.e. don't sin or you'll go to hell. We worry so much about what will happen after we die that our lives seem to revolve around it. We simply can't understand.

Moral of the story? Confusion.

Of course this will tie into the Helena Ariel story. He sold his soul to the devil, did a few things which resulted in his wife wandering off and dying, and he is contemplating what will become of him after death.

I agree. It's the best interpretation. And as a Christian I agree with the worrying too much about the afterlife. Obviously god put us on earth for a reason, why should we waste all our time here?
