Hester Prynne is the main character of The Scarlet Letter. she committed adultery, so hence all of the lyrics pointing towards giving into temptation and commitments to others being destroyed by curiosity. the 'Scarlet Letter' in the book was a big 'A' on Hester Prynne's chest (A for Adultery, obviously) and also so everyone in the community could know how bad of a person she was, hence the lines "society kept track of your defiance / branded into your chest". to be honest i have no idea what domestic livestock has to do with this song though haha
