This is my favorite Ozzy song. The guitar playing is just excellent and the lyrics are poignant. Even though I haven't had the trouble with alcoholism and drug addiction that Ozzy has, I can identify with the song. I haven't learned to live in the present and I just can't seem to let go of past mistakes and tragedies. I think I'm slowly learning to accept the past and focus on the present, but it's a long road (I guess that is what Ozzy means by "it's still the road that never ends").
How you had interpreted the song does seem to fit.
I do not judge what makes a song good by the charts, I judge it on if I can feel it, not by how loud it is but inside. If I can relate my own experiences with the song. This is one of those songs. And with what you said is how I have thought of the song and do view my life.

If this is truly what Ozzy wanted to say, then you pretty much hit the nail on the head.
