Perhaps I am over simplifying this, but I do not see this about a romantic relationship directly. To me, I see it from the perspective of the singer going through something life threatening. Maybe something like a cancer diagnosis, etc. He is saying this to his love interest and/or his family. He is saying "The news is grim, and I know you see the future as being bleak for me, but while I am scared, I've had too good of a life and I'll be damned if I'm going out like this."

I agree!!! And although it's not romantic at all, this song IS about a life threatening situation. Like Cancer. He was diagnosed when his life seemed fine and he was happy and in love. A surreal experience. Now he's putting his life into perspective and realizing what it should be about and what he took for granted, what he could lose. Something you don't think about...until you're forced to. Thinking that he could possibly die...and his (life) would just be gone.
