randyg4's pretty much got it in my opinion. Rather than it being pessimistic and optimistic people, it makes more sense to believe that he's much more of a realist than she is. I don't think the relationship could work at all, it's probably already over in this song, because he's saying the flowers will fade. The flowers SHE gave him. They've faded, along with the relationship and yeah, he's mourning the relationship.
This is my favourite song because I'm a realist like him, it makes sense.
