This song is wonderful: it's a great blend of folky British sounds and classic prog/early metal energy. To me, it's telling the story of an English hero who old and tired of fighting with victory just in sight. This could be a metaphor for any kind of struggle.
Nothing to suggest Englishness, however I'd agree that this song is basically about peace. Actually I'm reminded of the WW1 war poems of Owen and Sassoon.

"The fight is done and over
Neither lost, neither won"
"The fight is done and over
Neither lost, neither won"
You can't win a war without some sort of loss, usually human life.

"There were times when I stood at death's own door
Only hoping for an answer"
"There were times when I stood at death's own door
Only hoping for an answer"
Holding on to the vain hope that there was something worth dying for.
