The lyrics in this song involve a choice that was made by the vocalist, Matt’s mother. This was a choice that was made without his approval but has had a major influence on his life. His mother made the decision to leave Matt and his younger sister at a reasonably early age. Years later, Matt still can’t get over this tragedy in his life. The bands lyrics are riddled with words about his childhood and Mother.

Throughout the song, Matt repeats the words “I know” and “I don’t know”. The techniques used are contrast and repetition. This sends a message to us that he is confused. He faces confusion about why his mother left him, what he did wrong and constantly wonders what she is and was thinking. He wants to talk to his mother and lets that be known with the sentence “There’s so many questions I want to ask”. There is a strong repetition of the word “you”, this suggests that Matt believes that his Mother only cared about herself and only did what she thought was right for herself.

Matt also sends a message of forgiveness with the sentence “I hold nothing against you”. Yet at other times he seems mad and hurt with the lines “I had the right to speak, but you took that right away” and “I just feel we deserved a chance”. This shows that he is not quite ready to condemn his mother for her choice but is still very indignant of her preference.
