Almost certain this is about Taking Back Sunday. In an interview (google it) Fred made the statement that him leaving TBS influenced mannny of his songs for The Color Fred, and how he was frustrated this his ideas musically basically kept getting shot down by the other members of the band.

The whole "you've got ideas in your head..." seems to be speaking to the whole band TBS, and how they misjudged him.

The lines {What's the best time we've had, it's the best I ever had. Still you say, it isn't me.} seems to hit TBS hard saying that he gave his best to the band but they didn't want it, and when shooting down his ideas they tried to pull the "it isn't you" type thing to try to make him not feel bad.

The "whole foot in the door" is referring to Fred knowing for a long time that he was going to leave TBS before he eventually did. Once again in one of his interviews he talks about how he wrestled with the decision to leave for a while before he finally did.
