i sort of agree with you about the meaning
but i think he is trying to tell someone else not to turn away from thier relationship
he has made some sort of mistake and finally realizes that it's his fault but he doesn't really think he can change
and she is saying "it's not me you're waiting for" because she is trying to let him down easy and he is saying that he won't give it up... telling her not to turn away. He also understands why she is leaving and feels like he is going to die because she is gone. he recognizes that it's his fault at the end and that it won't work because he asks her to forget even though he knows he cant change.
