Love this song, its my favourite off the 'Tripping the Light Fantastic' album.
At the start of the song I think a close friend of the singer has recently died, he wants to be strong so asks god to help him. I can't seem to figure out if the second part of the song is about the same friend or years later another friend has died (in a bad way maybe? 'kills me when I think of what you went through...') and he has completely lost his faith, hence the 'God damn you god' line.
So I'm still unsure of the true meaning of this song but its good to analyse and work it out!
