This is a great song. I think its meaning is pretty straight forward, but powerful.
This song is about a son who is caught in a feud belonging to his father. He doesn't even know why he is fighting with the other family(Hill), its just something that has been going on since before he was even born.
The father basically influences his children to take part in this feud, to the point of beating the boys in the other family(Hill boys).
In the end the feud between these families brings nothing but the death of the Lawson father by the hands of the Hill boys), and his other sons(dead brother in Lauderdale south). In the end the son has nothing but resentment for his father, when he thinks about him, instead of celebrating his life, he would rather spit on his grave
@Orion510 close but no cigar. It is a true story except Jason is in fact a HILL boy not a Lawson. One can only assume that Jason has adopted the Lawson persona for narrative/dramatic purposes. His maternal great uncle is actually Hollan Hill who shot and killed the Lawson clan patriarch and was aquitted in a jury trial because, and I ain't making this up, Lawson "needed killing." A viable defense in the deep south in the 80s apparently. Read all about; the contemporary newspaper reports are online. Just Google "Murder in North Alabama 1982."
Jason has spoken of it a number...

Jason has spoken of it a number of times on stage. He mentions how at Hill clan reunions the family is split on it with some of them thanking Jason for bringing it to light while a lot of the others are angry and believe Jason had no right and that family shit should be left in the closet.
