I think "granite laid" refers to the granite headstone we all will likely be laid beneath. And the white sheet is just another reference to death- as in the white sheet they pull over you on your deathbed.
The last stanza seems to elude to a "we all die alone" concept. Not sure if that was what he was going for. Just something I hear.
