This is one of my favourite Manics songs. It reminds me of the disappearance of Richey which is quite a grim observation. The Severn bridge where his car was found is apparently near the mouth of a river I read somewhere. So there's the connection to the 'Door to the river', also 'I think I'll leave and take some rest' is especially poignant, almost weary. The whole connotations of someone being lost and weary and the loss of innocence are evident throught, and the slightly painful catharsis of passing through the door to the river has exposed to him a glimpse of a glory previously inaccesible to him.
