i've been thinking about this song in a different context lately. what if it is more about a family issue? like a sibling that is making bad choices with drugs or alcohol, and not thinking of her family and how it affects them. If "isabelle" and the speaker were close, it could really take a toll on the speaker if isabelle is making bad choices. the speaker wonders what isabelle is thinking when she makes such choices and then the speaker ends up driving around looking for her just to make sure she's okay. I think when the speaker talks about communicating he/she is saying that things at home will never be the same with the choices isabelle is making. when the speaker says he's like the blue skies, etc., i think he is saying that he is just going on with life while isabelle is ruining hers. and it kills him.
