I think the song is about being broken hearted and not knowing what to do with your memories...I personally like to apply it to being a relationship, but I guess it could be anything (childhood would definitely fit w the tone of the song).
When it says "finding a replacement with a heart sedated," to me that really captures that feeling when you're so heart broken, you can only find a "replacement" because you're unable to feel the same passion you feel for the person who broke you.
I think the whole song the singer is saying he really doesn't want to get over this person...he doesn't want to bury the memories in a place where it's dark...he wants to hold on to them, to "protect" them, but also "not be nervous" around these memories, which I feel is saying he doesn't want to be vulnerable to these memories because they still hurt.
When he says he's bursting with pride because his heart is finally mending..but then immediately contradicts it with "it's not too late to change your mind," I feel that's meant to show he doesn't actually want to get over this person, and that's why the song ends with "it shouldn't feel like it is ending." He can't really let himself heal.
I don't know though...i mean, I've like intensely personalized this to my own situation. haha
