Craig said at the acoustic show for 89X on 2/16/08 that this song is about having an open mind. His message is that it is better to have an open mind about things than to just think them odd and form a judgment solely on that.
With that said, this is how I analyzed these gorgeous words:
"And the moment that she left the room
The album started skipping
Goodbye to beauty, shared with the ones that you love"
I believe 'she' is a personification of normality that helps to allude to making this song more universal. Writers write things not for themselves but for the fact of letting other understand interpret things and relate things in their own ways.
"A shadow that has fallen over this town
A shadow that has fallen over this town"
I think the shadow is a wave of oppression and lower appreciation for those who do things in odd ways. It seems to say how people seem to just cast them away because of how different their methods are.
"Attention, all of my worst critics
Who were once the best of friends
You're all just crows on the power lines"
Of course, this is just as the lines read. The speaker was most likely betrayed by close friends because as the speaker found himself/herself developing as a person into someone a bit different and perhaps even obscure, they were dropped by others. Therefore, they are now the prey that the crows watch from above, acting "holier than thou".
"Sightings of shape shifting
Dissolved into the darkness
A final opinion is of less value
Than an appreciation of
Intolerance for obscurity"
The sighting of shape shifting is perhaps the changing personalities of said friends that the speaker knew. The "dissolved into the darkness", as in they became like the rest of the shadow around them. Their "final opinion", or judgment, is of less value than an appreciation for odd ways.
"Theatrics, all made up and pianos all playing at once through the dust
I found it difficult in my excitement to keep from floating off
To keep from floating off and off and off
Into romantic speculations
Into romantic speculations"
I think the theatrics is the drama caused by the departure of said friends. Pianos all playing at once could symbolize the power that the speaker has to overcome a situation. While the crows are loud and bickering at them with their jagged beaks and claws, the speaker plays music loudly throughout the land to drown out the oppression. Perhaps it is also a symbolic light deep within the said shadow. However, even though the speaker is strong willed, they find it difficult from floating off into a dreamland, perhaps thinking of a perfect world where nothing like this happened. Maybe "romantic speculations" is referring to the movement of Romanticism, which was partly a revolt against aristocratic social and political norms of the Age of Enlightenment and a reaction against the scientific rationalization of nature, and was embodied most strongly in the visual arts, music, and literature.
"I'll rest on nets made by spiders fed on drug dosed flies
The spider sings alone
The spider sings alone
He paced the room with hurried steps
And placed his hands upon his head
As if he were afraid
His thoughts were bursting from his brain"
I think this is the speaker beginning to lose control of himself. His mind is so divided from thoughts of revolution and conformity that perhaps his open mind is beginning to let things fall out, so to speak. His thoughts are so powerful and feelings so deep that he's beginning to wonder, maybe, how can someone as an individual overcome such a large darkness? The spider, I imagine, is the crows all together. The web is the darkness and oppression where the speaker finds himself stuck. The spider sings alone, meaning the crows sing in unison. They're coming towards him. Maybe the speaker has turned to drugs in other to convey a sense of life to himself/herself. They find their courage faltering, for they are afraid of the spider.
All in all, I think this song is one of the best written songs ever. Then again, I say that about EVERY Chiodos song haha
