Matt's songs are often about political issues, and The Audio of Being was released in 2001 (not sure which month). Considering that the song was written before the release of the album it could have very easily been written sometime in between George W. Bush's election and the release of the album. Given that, I think most of the first verse references how the 2000 US Presidential election was rigged (specifically Florida). I think the line 'The secret's out But it's too loud to think it' means that the cheating was so obvious yet nobody challenged the decision. Then of course 'Whatever drowns the counting machines out' means that the votes in Florida did not count, and the people's voices were completely disregarded. That's my take on it. Comments?
