I'm pretty sure MCS is referring to the "Sink or Swim" concept. It's pretty simple, when you're swimming, you have to keep on swimming to stay afloat, or else you'll drown. Also, you can't swim forever without any help.
Every time "swimming" is referenced in MCS's music, the context that it's in usually describes the ability to keep a relationship going, or lack thereof.
"If we keep swimming maybe this will never die" -Make Out Kids
"I'll swim backwards" -Better Open the Door
"Busy hands keep swimming, they don't like swallowing" -Autographs & Apologies
"I can't swim in the silence of your skin" -My Favorite Accident
Etc.
The sink or swim concept is what MCS is all about. Knowing that things aren't what they should be, but constantly putting up with it for that small hope that it will be all right.
