This is about American intervention in Columbia. They essentially forced Panama from the Columbians, and bought all of the French progress on the Panama Canal for 40 million dollars. Bunau-Varilla was a French businessman who essentially convinced Roosevelt and the Congress to betray their treaty with the Columbians, and aid the Panamanian rebels in their move to independence.
Murdering their plants... enormous amounts of herbicides were used to clear the forests of mosquitos.
Paper's shot to pieces, betrayal of treaty.
Bunau-Varilla was from France, and the original Panama effort was a French one.
Ignoring all of their history... this is not really...

Ignoring all of their history... this is not really true. Panamanians were never Columbians, but America had no real background to qualify them for meddling in Columbia's business.
The kids are small countries that can't stand a chance against the power of 1st world countries, and America-Panama relations are used as an example here.
Glad to hear they were playing this one at the end of a show. Like the rest of the album, this song seems to be about a collegiate kid with an overtone of baroque instruments to hide the reality of the hopeless situation he is in. He despises the work of his parents yet comes around after feeling the comfort of they afford.

Let the album art cover your field of view. Flowing, vibrant colors on top of a university crowd's party. Has it always been this way since the 60's or was it something in the water?

i dont like that panama canal interpretation. it feels to specific, and too far in the past. plus i dont get some elements of it such as how that bit about the plants relates to any of the other lines in the verse. i like the drug trafficing approach. the verse
"I didn't like the business
But that was at first glance
Your pillow feels so soft now
But still you must advance"
seems to take a youth getting dragged into the underworld business and getting used to it. it doesnt seem to fit as well in your interpretation.
TommyF115 or anyone else, could you clarify...

TommyF115 or anyone else, could you clarify this all for me because i know my interpretation is flawed too but i dont know enough about the panama canal to comprehend.
i have no idea what is it all about, but it sounds really great! especially in a takeawayshow
