I think it's protest, too: anticipatory protest from The Matches to those who will complain about the changes in the Matches' sound they'll find on the new CD, A Band In Hope. When the 4 Matches are united, they are more than the sum of their individual parts; they are then one band making the changes THEY want to make in THEIR music. I LOVE the sentiment!
