It made me think of the Chekhov play "Wild Honey" b/c of the obvious "honey" and the singing in the background that sounds like a train whistle. And then I looked up the plot and it sounds like it could be related. (I had only seen my mom's old poster :P She saw Ian McKellan live in this play!!!) But it's about an old man that was once promising but the events of his life have reduced him to a poor schoolmaster in a village, cheating on his wife to try to "complete himself". I think this song could be from the young wife's point of view. She's mourning his loss of his dignity and purpose (he's "lost", "at sea", etc), even though she still loves him. The "food for the bees" is him; that's a motif in the play, he's the sweet honey and he's being eaten by the bees, or the women (I'm not explaining that right, but you get the idea....)
