'Terry and Julie' reference British actors Terrence Stamp and Julie Christie, who were a real-life couple while filming 'Far From the Maddening Crowd'(1967). This song represents the feeling of a depressed person staying home, alone, dreaming and fantasizing about the people he sees coming and going from the tube station. He makes himself content with a sunset, but Waterloo station is as ugly as any industrial area. Claiming he "don't need no friends" is what really gets me, because the line infers that he has no friends, or that his friends have betrayed him; maybe both. Anyway, it was an interesting choice for Def Leppard to cover, kind of an obscure original by the Kinks (at least here in the U.S.) and I really like it.
