what i think has happened here is that the interest has gotten scared of his/her relationship with the singer. this has happened because the singer has introduced different ways of thinking and a different way of living into the interest's life. fearing that things are moving to fast while dealing with something he/she isn't familiar with,, the interest decides that either he/she doesn't want to pursue anything at the moment or can't decide whether or not to pursue it, leaving the singer up in the air... confused... vulnerable. now this could be going on for a while. slowly, the singer starts to realize that the interest is moving away from what they originally started, and possibly thinking of other options that don't involve the singer. The singer, in an attempt to save whatever might happen, tells the interest to stay and fight while his friends or that inner voice that knows the truth tells him not to wait... (in the background of the chorus, i hear "don't wait" ).
so the song's about a hopeless romantic who really wants something with this other person, convincing that person to fight, while knowing that there's probably nothing to fight for.
