it sounds to me like he's singing about someone who he cares about, but I don't get the impression he's in love. it's more like a close friend who's depressed, and he knows he's just got to distance himself and let her hit bottom so that she can climb back out again, but it still hurts to watch her go through it. I could be biased somewhat by current events in my life, though.
