I believe this song is about a man who's unhappy with his situation in life. He wanted to go somewhere, and wanted to be with this certain girl, even though he knows he could do a lot better than her. He can't help his feelings for her though, and he's sad that she hurts him, when she knows as well as he does that she doesn't deserve him. He wants to "make it out with pride" which might be hard because this girl is tooling him, and although he should come to a "time for leaving," he "will love you instead." He wants her to feel the way he feels for her, but no matter what, he will still love her, because she is the only "joy I've known."
Might make sense because since he's worried and sad, he's resorting to whiskey to help his problems that can't end because he won't let his mind win over his heart.
