I think this is about the kind of hopeless state our youth (and some of the references make it sound like he's talking about the middle-class youth) is subjected to.
We don't exactly want to get wasted all of the time, and he's kind of making fun of doing so, but we've been so homogenized and bored to death that that's all we're left with in a monotonous day-by-day life filled with pressures and constant planning for the "future" and "careers".
That might just be what I WANT it to mean, though.
