She's basically given her heart to him but is afraid it will scare him away. From this she's learned not to love him too much because she wants the same back from him and all she's doing right now is waiting for him to love her back.

so true, i am in the exact same situation with a guy that is afraid to "get his feet wet
" again and i am basically wearing my heart on my sleeve. i see what i am doing in reaching out to him as taking a huge risk, even though afraid. but his past hurt is keeping him from doing the same. it is a really heart wrenching situation when you like someone a lot or love them a lot and they are afraid of you, not because of you, but because of what someone else has done. sigh......
