I also don't really hear him say "alone and dead." It sounds more to me like he's saying "alone." Lastly I always heard the final line as "alone, under." (But that could just be that I was hoping that this song was at least somewhat an extension of Oceanic in which love was liquid, and being taken under is the most sublime of possibilities.
